The West Bengal Athletics Association is a non-profit organisation registered under section 7 of West Bengal Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961.and affiliated with The Athletics Federation of India and Bengal Olympic Association. The main objective of the association is promotion of athletics in our state. The WBAA has 21 district units, 12 club units and 6 office club units. During early fifties, the organisation was founded and was known as Amateur Athletic Federation, West Bengal and was controlled by the Bengal Olympic Association. In the year 1962 the organisation was separated from the Bengal Olympic Association took registration under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act. 1961 and started functioning as an autonomous body. In the month of September, 1968 the name of the organisation was changed to Amateur Athletic Association, West Bengal. Again in the year 2004 the organisation changed its name to West Bengal Athletic Association. Finally in the year 2019 it was decided that the name of the organisation to be changed to West Bengal Athletics Association.
Our main aims and objectives of formation WBAA are to promote and encourage Athletics in our state. Help to Athletes, Coaches and Technical Officials for enhancement of their knowledge and technique through different types of development programme. Beside that as and when possible rendering financial assistance to individual athletes,officialsand affiliated organizations for the promotion of training in athletics and holding competitions, athletics / sporting events.Selection of State Athletic contingent for the National level competitions conducted by AFI and if permitted by AFI, to send team abroad for competitions.
Our Organisation organized it’s first State Athletic Meet in the year 1950 on 27th & 28th January, at MohunBagan / East Bengal Club (the then) ground. We organized the State Meetevery year and the last 69th State Athletic Championship was conducted at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Salt Lake, Kolkata from 8th to 11th August, 2019 where about 1200 athletes of ten age group categories representing 38 affiliated units participated.
